How to find startup events in the UK that are actually worth going to

Where to look

Public listings platforms are the obvious start, but the higher-signal sources are usually institutional or local.

• Your local Growth Hub or council business support pages.
• University enterprise and incubator programmes, many events are open to non-students.
• Industry bodies for the sector you sell into, not for 'startups'.
• Community-run meetups organised by working founders and engineers.
• Accelerator demo days and open sessions, where the audience is self-selected.

How to spot one that's worth it

The failure mode of startup events is a room of people all selling to each other. Two questions filter most of that out: who is this event for, and what do they want from attending?

• Is there a specific topic, or is it just 'networking'?
• Are the organisers building something themselves?
• Is the format structured, workshop, Q&A, roundtable, rather than open mingling?
• Would you be happy if you only met two people there?

Make it produce something

Go with one question you want answered and one thing you can offer. Ask your question of three people, and write down what they say before you get home.

Send one follow-up each within two days. This part is where nearly all the value is, and where nearly everyone stops.

London is not the only option

London has the highest volume, but Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Belfast, Cardiff and Cambridge all have active founder communities, and smaller scenes are often easier to become known in.
